A foundational tenet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) is that they claim to be the only true Christians on Earth. They say that they believe in the Jesus Christ of the Bible. They say that they believe that He died and shed His blood for their sins. They say that He is a God. They say that they are Christians because His name is in the name of their church. They say... a lot of things. But what do they mean by these statements? When they say that they believe in the Jesus of the Bible, do they mean that they believe that Jesus was born of a virgin, in the city of Bethlehem? When they say that He died for their sins, do they mean that His blood is efficacious to cleanse us of all sin? When they say that He is a God, do they mean that He is eternally One with our Heavenly Father? The answer to these questions is an undeniable no!

The Latter-day Saints (LDS) proclaim that if they accept the Jesus of the Bible as their Lord and Savior, then we should accept them as Christians. To that statement we should give a hearty "Amen!" The issue then would come down to whether or not the LDS "Jesus" truly is the Jesus of the Bible. Anyone who has read the Bible is aware that God warns us of false prophets, false teachers and false christs, over and over in His Word. But what some may not be aware of, is that God warns that it is possible to worship a false Jesus! You can find this admonition from the Apostle Paul in II Corinthians 11:4. He is cautioning the people that they were not prepared to defend themselves against false teachers who would bring a false gospel, a false Spirit, and a false Jesus. Paul also goes on to spell out the consequences of such a mistake, in Galatians 1:6-8. Here the Apostle emphatically states if a person, or even an angel (Moroni?), was to preach another gospel, other than the gospel of the New Testament, they were to be accursed. The word in the Greek, is anathema, which means to be eternally condemned. Evidently we are dealing with a subject that God takes quite seriously, and therefore, we should do no less.

The following chart is designed to give a comparison of the LDS "Jesus" versus the Biblical Jesus. For both perspectives, the doctrinal position is stated along with the reference. The reference is then quoted in its entirety in the proceeding pages, in numerical order. Some references are repeated because the statements cover multiple topics. Though many more references are available, for the sake of space, we tried to keep them at a manageable level. MD = Mormon Doctrine (Written by LDS Apostle, Bruce R. McConkie) Some LDS will say this book is not "authoritative" because it is not written by a "Prophet." In reality, McConkie is just codifying the teachings of the LDS Prophets. Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, Pg. 218, "When the time came that His first-born, the Savior, should come into the world and take a tabernacle (a body), the Father came Himself and favoured that spirit with a tabernacle instead of letting any other man do it. The Savior was begotten by the Father of His spirit, by the same Being who is the Father of our spirits, and that is all the organic difference between Jesus Christ and you and me." (Brigham Young; Second Prophet and President of the LDS Church)

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, Pg. 211, "I will say that I was naturally begotten; so was my father, and also my Saviour Jesus Christ. According to the Scriptures, he is the first begotten of his father in the flesh, and there was nothing unnatural about it." (Heber C. Kimball; Fourth Prophet and President of the LDS Church)

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8, Pg. 115, "The birth of the Savior was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood- was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers." (Brigham Young)

Mormon Doctrine, Pg. 546-547 (under the topic of "Only Begotton Son"), "These name-titles all signify that our Lord is the only Son of the Father in the flesh. Each of the words is to be understood literally. Only means only; Begotten means begotten; and Son means son. Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers."

3) BIBLE: He created Lucifer

Colossians 1:16-17, "For by Him (Jesus) were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him and for Him."

John 1:3, "All things were made by Him (Jesus); and without Him was not anything made that was made."

Mormonism: He was created

Mormon Doctrine, Pg. 281 (under the topic of "Firstborn"), "Christ is the Firstborn, meaning that he was the first Spirit child born to God the Father in the pre-existence."

What The Mormons Think of Christ, Pg. 22, "But it must not be forgotten, however little the doctrine is known and believed in the Christian world, that all men lived in a premortal estate before they were born into this world; all were born in the premortal existence as the spirit children of the Father. Christ was the firstborn spirit child; and from that day forward he has had the preeminence in all things."

The Gospel Through the Ages, Pg. 51, "Jesus became a God and reached His great state of under-standing through consistent effort and continuous obedience to all the Gospel truths and universal laws."

5) BIBLE: He will come back in Glory; no secret visitations

Matthew 24:23-37, "Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not."

Revelation 1:7, "Behold He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him... "

Mormonism: He already came back (in secret)

Pearl of Great Price, Pg. 49, verse 14 & 17, Joseph Smith claimed, "I retired to the woods... (verse 17) And I saw two Personages... standing above me... one of them ... said... This is my Beloved Son. Hear Him."

6) BIBLE: He came to save people, not destroy them

Luke 9:51-56 (Two of the disciples wanted to call down fire from heaven to punish some people for rejecting Jesus), verse 55, "But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them."

Mormonism: When He came to America, He came to judge and destroy

Book of Mormon, III Nephi 9:1-15, "and it came to pass ... (vs. 3) I burned with fire... (vs. 4 ) I caused to be sunk in the depths of the sea, and the inhabitants thereof to be drowned... (vs. 5) have I covered with earth... (vs. 6) have I caused to be sunk, and the inhabitants to be buried up in the depths of the earth (vs. 7) and waters have I caused to come up {floods}... (vs. 8) have I caused to be sunk... (vs. 9) have I caused to be burned with fire... I did cause them to be burned... (vs. 10) I caused to be burned with fire... (vs. 11) I did send down fire and destroy them... (vs. 12) and many great destructions have I caused to come upon this land... (vs. 15) Behold, I am Jesus Christ the Son of God... "

{Although the Book of Mormon (BOM) teaches this blasphemous doctrine of Jesus killing hundreds of thousands of people, you can rest assured that it didn’t really happen. The BOM has been proven to be historically, scientifically and archeologically bankrupt. There are 38 cities mentioned in the BOM that were supposedly here in the Americas from 600BC to 400AD. Even though the LDS "Jesus" annihilated 16 of those cities, that still leaves 22 cities, none of which have been located by the LDS Church or anyone else. That is why the BOM has no maps... because the cities do not exist.}

7) BIBLE: His blood cleanses us from all sin

I John 1:7, "... the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin"

Romans 5:9, "... being now justified by his blood... "

Ephesians 1:7, "... in whom we have redemption through his blood"

Mormonism: His blood cannot cleanse us from all sin

Mormon Doctrine, Pg. 92-93, "But under certain circumstances there are some serious sins for which the cleansing of Christ does not operate, and the law of God is that men must then have their own blood shed to atone for their sins."

Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 1, Pg. 135, "Man may commit certain grievous sins... that will place him beyond the reach of the atoning blood of Christ. If then he would be saved, he must make sacrifice of his own life to atone... for the blood of Christ alone under certain circumstances will not avail. Joseph Smith taught that there were certain sins so grievous that man may commit, that they will place the transgressor beyond the power of the atonement of Christ."

{LDS Prophet, Brigham Young taught that one of these "grievous sins" was inter-racial marriage. In the JOD, Vol. 10, Pg. 110, he said, "Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain (the black race), the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so."}

9) BIBLE: His Heavenly Father is Eternally GOD

Romans 1:20, "... even His eternal power and Godhead."

I Timothy 1:17, "Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory for ever and ever."

Psalm 90:2, "... from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."

Mormonism: His Heavenly Father had to become a God

History of the Church, Vol. 6, Page 305, "God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man... I am going to tell you how God came to be God. We have imagined and supposed that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea, and take away the veil, so that you may see." Pg. 306, "You have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves... the same as all Gods have done before you... "

{As offensive as these doctrines are, they actually did not originate with Joseph Smith. In Genesis 3:5, we see Eve tempted by a servant of Satan who assures her that if she will eat the fruit, she will become "as gods."}

10) BIBLE: He said His Father would send the Spirit to teach us

John 14:26, "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit), whom the Father will send in My Name, He shall teach you all things..."

Mormonism: He said all Christian creeds (beliefs) are an abomination

Pearl of Great Price, Pg. 49, verse 19, "I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt... "

11) BIBLE: He and His Father are One and there is only One God

John 10:30, "I and My Father are One."

James 2:19, "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well... "

I Corinthians 8:4, "... there is none other God but one."

I Timothy 2:5, "For there is One God... "

Mormonism: He is only one of many Gods

History of the Church, Vol. 6, Pg. 474, Joseph Smith said, "I wish to declare I have always and in all congregations when I have preached on the subject of the Diety, it has been the plurality of Gods."

History of the Church, Vol. 6, Pg. 306, Smith also said, "... you have got to learn how to be Gods yourselves, and to be kings and priests to God, the same as all Gods have done before you... "

Pg. 308, "... in the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods; and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world and people it."

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 7, Pg. 333, Brigham Young said, "How many Gods there are, I do not know. But there never was a time when there were not Gods."

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 2, Pg. 245, LDS Apostle Orson Pratt said, "If we should take a million of worlds like this and number their particles, we should find that there are more Gods than there are particles of matter in those worlds."

12) BIBLE: He said His Word (The Bible) will stand forever

Matthew 24:35, "Heaven and Earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away."

I Peter 1:23-25, "... the Word of God, which liveth and abideth forever... the Word of the Lord endureth forever."

Mormonism: He revealed to Joseph Smith that His Word (The Bible) had suffered corruption

History of the Church, Vol. 1, Pg. 245, "From sundry revelations which had been received it was apparent that many important points touching the salvation of man, had been taken from the Bible, or lost before it was compiled."

Book of Mormon, I Nephi 13:28, "Wherefore, thou seest that after the book (Bible) hath gone forth through the hands of the great and abominable church, that there are many plain and precious things taken away from the book, which is the book of the Lamb of God."

13) BIBLE: He taught that His Church would prevail

Matthew 16:18, "... I will build my Church; and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it."

Ephesians 3:21, "Unto Him be glory in the Church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end."

Mormonism: He told Joseph Smith that His Church had fallen into total apostasy

Pearl of Great Price, Pg. 49, verse 19, "... they were all wrong... all their creeds were an abomination... those professors were all corrupt."

History of the Church, Vol. 1, Pg. XL, "Nothing less than a complete apostasy from the Christian religion would warrant the establishment of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

14) BIBLE: He had 12 Apostles

Mark 3:14, "And He ordained twelve, that they should be with Him... "

Revelation 21:14, "And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb."

{This is irrefutable evidence that the 12 Apostles chosen by Jesus Christ, Himself, were to be the foundation of the Church, with Jesus as the Cornerstone. We can build upon their teachings (Ephesians 2:20), but we are never told to build another foundation of 12 more "apostles." Acts 1:20 only says the apostate apostle (Judas) was to be replaced. Although the disciples tried to replace Judas on their own (Acts 1:20-26), The Lord evidently had other plans. In Acts 9:15, He personally called Saul of Tarsus (the Apostle Paul) to be His "Chosen Vessel." Therefore, we see that Jesus personally hand-picked all 12 Apostles, including Judas’ replacement, the Apostle Paul (I Corinthians 15:8-10). Nowhere in Scripture does it say to replace the Apostles as they died. A house only needs one foundation.}

Mormonism: He had 24+ Apostles

Book of Mormon, Moroni 2:1, (Heading: Jesus gave the Nephite Apostles power to confer the gift of the Holy Ghost.)"The words of Christ, which he spake unto his disciples, the twelve whom he had chosen... " {These twelve American Apostles were in addition to the twelve original Apostles that Jesus chose in the Middle East.}

15) BIBLE: He turned water into wine

John 2:1-11, "And the third day there was a marriage in Cana... and when they wanted wine... thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana... "

Mormonism: At His own wedding

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 2, Pg. 210, LDS Apostle Orson Hyde said, "Jesus Christ was married at Cana of Galilee, that Mary, Martha, and others were his wives, and that he begat children."

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 4, Pg. 259, "... there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and on a careful reading of that transaction, it will be discovered that no less a person than Jesus Christ was married on that occasion."

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1, Pg. 346, LDS Prophet, Brigham Young stated, "The grand reason of the burst of public sentiment in anathemas upon Christ and his disciples was evidently based on polygamy... A belief in the doctrine of plurality of wives caused the persecution of Jesus and his followers."

16) BIBLE: In the beginning, He was with God and He was God

John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Mormonism: In the beginning, He was with God and He was a God. And so are we; we are co-equal with God

I John 4:12, "If we love one another, God dwelleth in us... "

Mormonism: He does NOT dwell in our hearts

Doctrine and Covenants 130:3, "... the idea that the Father and the Son dwell in a man’s heart is an old sectarian notion, and is false."

18) BIBLE: Salvation is by Grace through Faith in Him alone

Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by Grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Titus 3:5, "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us... "

Romans 10:9-10, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

Mormonism: Salvation is through the atonement of Jesus Christ and obedience to Joseph Smith and the laws and ordinances of Mormonism

Pearl of Great Price, Pg. 60; Articles Of Faith #3, "We believe that through the Atonement of Christ all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel."

Mormon Doctrine, Pg. 670, LDS Apostle Bruce R. McConkie says, "If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation. There is no salvation outside The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 1, Pg. 189, LDS Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith boldly claimed that there is "no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith."

19) BIBLE: Encourages you to have a personal relationship with Him

20) BIBLE: We know the True Jesus Christ as He reveals Himself to us through His Holy Spirit and through His Word (The Bible)

I Corinthians 2:10, "But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit... "

John 14:26, "... the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) ... shall teach you all things."

I John 5:13, "These things have I written unto you that believe on the Name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life..."

Mormonism: Current LDS President and Prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, admits the Mormon "Jesus" is different from the Christian Jesus

LDS Church News, June 20,1998, Pg. 7, "In bearing testimony of Jesus Christ, President Hinckley spoke of those outside of the Church who say Latter-day Saints do not believe in the traditional Christ. ‘No, I don’t. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak."

The Ensign, May, 1977, Pg. 26, LDS General Authority Bernard Brockbank said, "It is true that many of the Christian churches worship a different Jesus Christ than is worshipped by the Mormons or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

21) BIBLE: He created all things, including Adam and Eve

Colossians 1:16, "For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him... "

John 1:3, "All things were made by Him; and without Him was not anything made that was made."

Mormonism: Adam (from the Garden of Eden) is His Father

Journal of Discourses, Vol. 1, Pg. 50, Brigham Young stated, "When our father Adam came into the Garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is MICHAEL, The Archangel, the ANCIENT OF DAYS! about whom holy men have written and spoken – He is our FATHER and our GOD, and the only God with whom WE have to do."(sic)

22) BIBLE: He taught against racial divisions

Galatians 3:28, "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus."

Colossians 3:11, "Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all."

Mormonism: He taught that black skin was a curse from God

II Nephi 5:21, "And he had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them."

Jacob 3:5 & 8, "Behold, the Lamanites your bretheren, whom ye hate because of their filthiness and the cursing which hath come upon their skin... (8) Oh my bretheren, I fear that unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins will be whiter than yours, when ye shall be brought before the throne of God."

{To this day, when confronted with these racial teachings, the LDS will try to justify their position by insisting that this is taught in the Bible, too. They say that God cursed Cain with black skin, for killing Abel. But one only needs to read Genesis 4:11 to see that the curse that was placed on Cain was that his crops would no longer grow (he was a farmer). God did place a "mark" on him later, for his protection, but nowhere does the Bible even hint that it was black skin.}

Conclusion

"Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God!"   In Matthew 16:15, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Who do you say that I am?" If Peter would have said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the Living God... a polygamist, who was born in Jerusalem of an exalted man through natural means; the brother of Lucifer; a killer who was created by God; whose blood cannot cleanse all sin."- Peter would have heard (once again), "Get thee behind me Satan," because that is exactly the source of these doctrines! Some LDS will try to say that they don’t believe their own Church’s teachings on certain subjects. But if you are LDS, you don’t have that luxury. If your prophets are infallible... who are you to doubt their teachings? Mormonism is a package deal; it’s all or nothing. Since all of these quotations are from Official LDS sources, it simply comes down to believing Joseph Smith or Jesus Christ. In John 14:6, Jesus said, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father but by Me." But you must have the right Jesus!

Who do you say that He is?
